'Eclectic' is an overused word these days, and,
particularly in the light of World Music, is often a synonym for
dabbling. True eclecticism is first about understanding and having
knowledge and respect for the source, and only then making it your
own. That sums up what makes Alan Prosser's guitar-playing a great deal
more than interesting.
| Mar 20 | Liz Simcock | |
Liz Simcock writes songs and performs them in folk and acoustic
clubs in and around the Southeast. In 1999 she featured on the
Playpen Album of New Acoustic Music alongside Eliza Carthy, Billy
Bragg, Eddi Reader and Kathryn Williams. Since then she has trodden
an independent path, recording three albums and gaining a growing
reputation as a performer and songwriter.
| Apr 17 | Flossie Malavialle | |
Flossie Malavialle is a French singer who started getting involved in
the British folk scene in 2000-2001.
Her repertoire is very open as she likes all sorts of different music
genres. Her songs include famous numbers, including Allan Taylor's
Roll on the day, Kieran Halpin's Making up the miles,
Colum Sands'
The child who asks why, Starrett and Laird's John Condon
but also
Edith Piaf's eternal favourites No regrets, La vie en
rose... or
Jacques Brel's Amsterdam and Ne me quitte pas..."Flossie's great! She came over from France and wowed everybody with her sensational voice, her gutsy guitar style, eclectic repertoire and franglais patter" Vin Garbutt
| May 15 | Quicksilver | |
“After four years on BBC1's "That's Life!" Grant Baynham became a
household name. He is a formidable songwriter and has an energy and
enthusiasm which create a high-powered performance of material from
virtually every genre you can imagine. He's also one of the funniest
people I have ever met.” Hilary on Grant“Hilary has one of the most staggering voices in British acoustic music. Most folk fans will know it well from her work with top trio Artisan. If you haven't yet heard her live, then the CDs will be, firstly, a quite-possibly-life-changing treat and, secondly, a demonstration of her breath-taking range of tone and mood.”
